Why Clean Beauty?

IMG_8268.JPG

I have spent a lot of time this last year cleaning out my Make-Up Bag (let’s be real, my make- up closet) and really getting “in the know” about what I was actually putting on my face and body.

A lot of the products that I was putting on my face (AKA my skin, the biggest organ in my body) were carcinogens that are not only disrupting my hormones but also causing toxic cells to grow in my body. I know we can easily sluff this off, but I want to take a few minutes to get you in the know also!

Here are 4 ingredients that you probably put on your body this morning that you might want to reconsider putting on your body after reading this:

1. Mineral Oil: Mineral oil can irritate the skin causing a rash or burning feeling on contact. Breathing Mineral oil can irritate the lungs causing coughing and or shortness of breath.
(Flip over you and your kiddos products and see what has mineral oil in it and then toss them).

2. Talc: Talcum powder is made from talc, a mineral made up mainly of the elements magnesium, silicon, and oxygen. As a powder, it absorbs moisture well and helps cut down on friction, making it useful for keeping skin dry and helping to prevent rashes. It is widely used in cosmetic products such as baby powder and adult body and facial powders, as well as in a number of other consumer products.
BUT
In its natural form, some Talc contains asbestos a substance known to cause cancers in and around the lungs when inhaled. (OH DEAR, please check your ingredients for TALC…ASBESTOS… on my body!! No thank you).

3. Bismuth:
Bismuth is a naturally occurring metal used to manufacture solder, fishing anchors, shotgun pellets, and more. Many cosmetics and pharmaceuticals also contain bismuth in various forms.

While many people will tell you that bismuth is non-toxic in small amounts, sufficient exposure can produce nausea, headache, diarrhea, and pain. According to the Department of Physiology at the University of Tübingen in Germany, anemia is another potential negative side effect of exposure to bismuth and caution is advised when taking any medication containing bismuth.

Use Bare Minerals? Flip it over and see what’s in it.

A little more on Bismuth

4. Phthalates: Shown to damage the liver, kidneys, lungs and reproductive systems in animal studies, phthalates can be absorbed through the skin or inhaled. Read more here Scientists at government agencies in both the U.S. and Canada agree that exposure to the chemicals could cause a wide range of health and reproductive problems in people.

Ok. Whew. That was scary. Now that I have your attention let’s talk about what you’re simply putting on your face. I promise I am not here to scare anyone I just want my people in the KNOW. I know a lot of make-up and products feel good and look AMAZING but you’re slowly poisoning yourself with them. Why?
